In the galaxy that is Hollywood movie memorabilia, Sylvester Stallone took a swing at auctioning off pieces of his private collection spanning his legendary career. From handwritten scripts to iconic wardrobe items, Stallone’s Rocky artifacts fetched jaw-dropping prices, making headlines in the auction circuit.

Back in 2015, Stallone made what must have been a tough decision to sell off the bulk of his private Rocky artifacts with Heritage Auctions. A few years later, Sly switched gears, consigning even more props, wardrobe and personal pieces with the renowned Julien’s Auctions – the same auction house famed for handling Marilyn Monroe’s legendary “Happy Birthday Mr. President” dress, worn to JFK’s birthday. A dress that, in a twist of Hollywood drama, was “borrowed” and forever damaged by Kim Kardashian. But that’s another story!

Now, with Stallone’s recent 2023 acquisition of the misshapen, baggy red boxing robe he wore in the original Rocky, we wonder whether he might eventually send more items to auction in the future. As we bid farewell to this year, let’s take a ringside seat as we count down the top ten most expensive Rocky items ever sold, all owned and consigned by the Italian Stallion himself.

Top 10 Rocky Artifacts: The Countdown

10. Original Rocky II Storyboard Binder

Sold at Julien’s Auctions for $19,200 in 2021, this binder is an artistic journey into the making of Rocky II. Hand-drawn storyboards by Thomas J. Wright, augmented with Stallone’s handwritten notes, show sketches of the layout of the boxing ring, and excellent character sketches of Apollo, Adrian and Paulie.

9. Rocky’s Red Tuf-Wear Boxing Gloves from Rocky III (1982)

Going toe-to-toe with Clubber Lang in Rocky III, Stallone’s red Tuf-Wear gloves landed a knockout at Julien’s Auctions, fetching $32,000 in 2021.

8. Pair of Enormous Fight Banners from the Original Rocky (1976)

Even though the poster was wrong (showing those red pants with the white stripe) these hand painted banners depicting Rocky Balboa and Apollo Creed remained hugely visible during the movie’s climactic boxing match. Standing at a colossal 30 feet each, these Rocky and Apollo Creed banners fetched $52,500 in 2021. Now – you gotta find a spot in the living room to hang these things!

7. Rocky’s Yellow-with-Black Custom Nike Boxing Boots from Rocky III (1982)

Originally estimated at $10,000 – $20,000, this pair of Nike’s featuring Rocky’s name on the rear charged into the auction ring, selling for $62,500 at Julien’s Auctions in 2021. The boots were screen-matched to the moment when Thunderlips (Hulk Hogan) is about to bust back into the ring.

6. Rocky’s Black Satin Tiger Jacket from Rocky II (1979)

Worn by Stallone throughout Rocky II, this black satin jacket, featuring an embroidered tiger design on the back, clinched a victory at Heritage Auctions, selling for $68,750 in 2021.

5. Sylvester Stallone’s Original Handwritten Rocky IV Script

Stallone’s humble writing habits took the spotlight as his original handwritten script for Rocky IV sold for $89,600 at Julien’s in 2021. The old notebook contains extensive fight choreography notes and dialogue that shaped what is considered the most popular Rocky sequel.

4. Rocky Balboa’s Screen-Matched Stars and Stripes Boxing Trunks from Rocky III

Meticulously screen-matched to roughly the middle of the final fight with Clubber Lang, these silk red-white-and-blue boxing trunks scored big at Julien’s Auctions, selling for $200,000 in 2021.

3. Sylvester Stallone’s Harley Davidson Motorcycle Used in Rocky III (1981)

Revving into the auction scene, Stallone’s “Shovelhead” V-twin motorcycle with a custom black and yellow paint scheme depicting Rocky’s “Italian Stallion” logo sold for $312,500 at Heritage Auctions in 2021. Sly most memorably rode the bike in the “Eye of the Tiger” montage in Rocky III and then revved right up to the Rocky Statue for a helmet smash following Mickey’s death.

2. Rocky Balboa’s Original Black Leather Jacket (1976)

A symbol of Rocky’s street-thug style in the original Rocky, this black leather jacket punched its way to $325,000, including buyer’s premium, at Heritage Auctions in 2021. Stallone had also saved lookalike leather jackets from Rocky II and Rocky V which were also sold.

1. Sylvester Stallone’s Original Handwritten “Rocky” Script Notebook

The crown jewel of the collection, Stallone’s original handwritten screenplay notebook for Rocky fetched an astounding $437,500 at Julien’s Auctions in 2021. This beat up, well used red Mead notebook might ordinarily have been tossed aside, but its tattered pages reveal precious gems to Rocky fans, like early revisions and previously unknown story concepts that shaped the characters and story.
