Today Sylvester Stallone made a big move in passing over the directorial reigns of the Rocky series to a newcomer – both to the Rockyverse and to directing.

“The character of Adonis Creed reflects this generation, and I believe it is important to have a director who is part of it,” Stallone posted to his social media during his pre-announced reveal of a Creed II tidbit.

“That is why I think we are lucky to have Steven Caple, Jr., a wonderful new talent take over the directorial chores and make the story as relatable as possible,” Sly posted. “He and Michael B Jordan will deliver a knockout!”

An up and coming African American director, Caple has several short movies under his professional belt as well as his own 2016 film, “The Land”, which premiered to good reviews at Sundance Film Festival. His story is much reminiscent of Creed’s director Ryan Coogler, who manned the well-received drama  before Sylvester Stallone found the young filmmaker worthy of manning the Rocky ship with his own 21st century take on the characters.

Caple holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from the USC School of Cinematic Arts, coincidentally the same school that helped hone Coogler’s directorial skills.

Actor Michael B. Jordan – who is reprising his role as Adonis Creed – posted the following: “Excited for Coogler to hand over the reins to Steven Caple, Jr. – our director for Creed 2! Can’t wait to bring you guys the next chapter of our story…coming at you November 2018!”

The search is still on for the actor or athlete who will nab the role of Vitor Drago, the son of Rocky’s cold war nemesis, Ivan Drago. Young UFC fighter Sage Northcutt submitted an audition tape to Sylvester Stallone in hopes of landing the part.

Creed II officially begins production in February, 2018.
