Bally's Hotel & Casino (Originally the MGM)
MGM Grand Hotel & CasinoSeen in: Rocky IV
Bally’s Hotel & Casino
3645 Las Vegas Blvd.
Las Vegas, NV 89109
Special Event: Apollo Creed vs. Ivan Drago
Before this extravagant setting was seen as the backdrop for Apollo’s hopeful comeback in Rocky IV, MGM’s facilities were used by the production crew a few years earlier. In 1982, the hotel and resort was engaged for use as an arena in Rocky III.
The original MGM’s famed Ziegfeld Room was transformed into the site of the exhibition match fought between Apollo Creed and Ivan Drago. From 1974 until early 1979, the Ziegfeld Room hosted NBC’s “Dean Martin Celebrity Roast” of stars like Frank Sinatra, Lucille Ball, Jimmy Stewart, John Wayne and many others. Set pieces and signage for Jubilee! – not to mention the showgirls – are prominently displayed during the exhibition match scene in the film.
In 1985, not very long after the filming of Rocky IV, the MGM was purchased by Bally’s and took Bally’s name which it still retains today. MGM’s original white and gold signage out front – where Wayne Newton was headlining during the time of Rocky IV – is long gone, and has been replaced by more modern signs featuring Bally’s name. The front entrance to the property is also extremely modified by what’s seen on screen in Rocky IV and is basically obliterated. Nothing to see here.
The MGM Grand Hotel currently in Las Vegas at the corner of Las Vegas Blvd. and Tropicana is NOT the location used for any Rocky film. The MGM name was simply transferred to it.
